4 tips for caring for your handmade ceramics.

It's no secret the we love and adore handmade ceramics here at Field Trip!! Handmade ceramics are not just beautiful pieces of art; they are also functional items that can enhance your daily life. Here’s how to care for your handmade ceramics, ensuring they remain cherished pieces for years to come.

1. Understanding Your Handmade Ceramics

  • Stoneware: Durable and non-porous, ideal for everyday use.
  • Earthenware: More porous and less durable, typically for decorative pieces.
  • Porcelain: Fine and delicate, often used for high-end items.

  • Online listings should tell you what you're looking at, in store you can just ask!

    2. Dishwasher vs Hand washing

This is our MOST ASKED question!

Dishwashers use more abrasive detergents than hand washing. More delicate glazes may be damaged over time. Hand washing is always the safest option. BUT.... we've spoken to our ceramicists and they all admit to using the dishwasher! If you have an everyday piece that you want to use everyday, don't let the hand washing stop you.

    3. Temperature Control

Avoid sudden temperature changes. For example, don’t place a fridge-cold ceramic dish into a really hot oven, as this can cause cracking. Of course, hot water for your tea or coffee is totally fine! All our handmade ceramics are microwave safe, however, any metallic glazes (whether hand made or commercially produced) should never go in the microwave.

    4. Enjoy Everyday

Functional hand made ceramics have been crafted to be used and cherished, not stored away in a cupboard. A beautifully crafted mug can turn your morning cuppa into something extra special, so enjoy your hand made ceramics every day!
